BEING PRESENT

TOUGH CANCER CONVERSATIONS

Talking about cancer or any chronic illness, for that matter, is never easy.

The young adult cancer community (known as “AYA”) in my experience lacks resources to support us through this cancer chaos journey.

However, I’ve personally found some extremely helpful resources.

ELEPHANTS & TEA

THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM IS CANCER. TEA IS THE RELIEF CONVERSATION PROVIDES.

One fantastic organization dedicated to the AYA cancer community is Elephants & Tea.

Their website has so many great resources for patients, survivors and care partners: https://elephantsandtea.com

VIRTUAL EVENTS IN THE DAYS OF COVID

As we’re continuing to live through the days of COVID, events are all virtual. Yet, it allows the AYA community to connect from all over the country.

One such event is the series Perkatory.

From their website:

“Elephants and Tea is bringing you a new way to hear and amplify the stories of the adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer community with the digital series Perkatory: Brewing Tough Conversations to Help Each Other Face Cancer.”

On the last Thursday of each month Elephants & Tea will host a Zoom meeting at 7:00pm Eastern Standard Time.

Upcoming Perkatory on February 25th

TOPIC: BEING PRESENT

For this event, Elephants & Tea has partnered with another organization b-present.org.

ABOUT B-PRESENT.ORG

STRENGTH THROUGH PRESENCE

From their website: http://b-present.org

“Research has shown when young adults receive adequate social support, they respond better to treatment, recovery times improve, and positive outcomes increase. We’re leveraging these research findings to provide education and resources that focus on strengthening the patient support network. It is within our reach to be better supporters and ensure an improved experience and quality of life for all young adults with cancer..

Young adults diagnosed with cancer are required to press pause during such a pivotal time in their lives and often don’t receive consistent support from busy friends. Unfortunately, poor support can contribute to a negative response to treatment and overall worse health outcomes. Through two key programs, b-aware and b-connected, we are providing the information and tools that empower the social support network to be present from pre-cancer diagnosis through survivorship.

I am honored to be speaking during the February event and reading my article on “Being Present”.

The goal of Perkatory is:

  • To encourage individuals to use their voice
  • Learn more about a specific topic that might be difficult for some cancer patients to bring up themselves
  • Bring each other out of “perkatory” to help live your best life

IT’S GOING TO BE A GREAT EVENT!
